Virtue on Display was designed in the style of 1770-1790 New England Samplers for the areas of Essex County Mass. and Newport, RI and is a mix of counted thread and surface embroidery. Elizabeth will share information on school girl samplers of the time and location that this sampler was based on. Additional short lectures will touch on the life and times of the students and teachers in this interesting era of American Samplers. Design size is 7¾” x 6¾” on 34 count linen. Stitches included Cross Stitch over one and two, Tent Stitch over one, Palastrina Knot, Stem Stitch (both counted and surface), Chain Stitch, Detached Fly Stitch, Hedebo Stitch, Couching, Double Backstitch, Alycia Lace over one, and Scotch Checker. Prework is Counted Cross Stitch and Basting. Student is to bring light and magnification, if needed, and usual stitching supplies. This class requires prework, deadline for registration is August 1, 2009.

Exploring stitches seems to be something Hideaway Stitchers want to do so we’ll explore surface stitches in this Notebook Class. Organized by technique, we’ll study Ribbon Embroidery stitches, Crewel Embroidery stitches, and American Surface Embroidery. This will be an ongoing class that will result in the student compiling a notebook of stitched samples. Special emphasis will be placed on design using the stitches learned. Kit will include fabric and threads, needles, stitch diagrams, and a notebook to store samples. Student to bring scissors, hoop or Q-Snap, and magnification, if needed.

Tracey will continue her beading notebook class that began this past Spring, although attendance in the first class is not a pre-requisite to Part II. This installment will include Netting, Right Angle Weave and Spiral Stitches. The notebook will provide you with a central location for instructions, history and examples of each stitch learned. Kit will include a notebook, instructions, diagrams, beads, needle and thread. Student to bring scissors and magnification, if needed.
